How to Monitor Your Credit

Nadine Hohnke

Whether you want to protect yourself against identity theft or just want to keep an eye on your credit score, it's smart for you to monitor your credit. Credit monitoring services let Detroit residents track their progress to better credit, make it easy to see if your score has been compromised, and go into any financial agreement knowing where you stand. If you've got questions like "how often should I check my credit?" or "how does credit monitoring work?" we're here to help.

How Does Credit Monitoring Work?

When it comes to credit monitoring, you’ll not only track how much you’re spending and saving for bills and other financial obligations, but also changes to your finances, such as employment and insurance changes.

When you subscribe to a credit monitoring service, you’ll have records of any current or past loans, along with other information like where your social security number has been used and changes to your home address. Many credit monitoring services send you regular updates -- say, every month or so -- and you can check your score personally whenever you want. They can also send you alerts if they detect unusual activity.

How Often Should I Check My Credit?

Thieves and scammers are finding new ways to commit identity theft in the post-COVID-19 world, and if you haven't checked your credit rating since before March of 2020, it would be a good idea to check it soon. If you sign up for credit monitoring, many services include

  • Fully-Managed Identity Recovery

  • Member Education

  • Identity Theft Newsletter

  • Credit Monitoring

  • Lost Document Replacement

  • Score Tracker

  • Expense Reimbursement

  • Dark Web Monitoring

  • Credential Vault

If you're not sure credit monitoring is for you, you should check in on your score at least once a year. Many Romulus and Redford residents check their score when they prepare their taxes, but we think it's better to check in more than once a year. And you should be checking your savings, checking, and credit card accounts monthly for any unexpected charges.
